Each community prides itself on teaching its language, practising its traditions and religions, and recalling its history throughout the world. The Sikhs have had mighty warriors, gracious and benevolent kings, wise and knowledgeable scholars and miraculous martyrdoms.
Sikhs have faced many holocausts, from the Chhota Ghalughara in Kahnuwan, Gurdaspur or the Wadda Ghalughara in Kup Rahira. Within these holocausts, every Sikh stood with the community, scholars led the charge, and the youngsters fought with their emotions.
However, the third holocaust of 1984 was something we had never faced before. The community was divided, scholars aided the government in their cause, and the youngsters were left to defend the community on their own. How was this possible? The same community with the most incredible empire in the world was now the same community challenging their Guru’s, Gurbani and ideology. Everyone has heard about November 1984. When Sikhs were pulled out of their homes and set alight with tyres around their necks, women were raped in the streets, and even children were not spared from this genocide.
This lit a fire within the Sikh youth, which led to a war with the Indian state. Great warriors like Jathedar Sukdev Singh Babbar, Bhai Avtar Singh Brahma, Baba Gurbachan Singh Manochahal, Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda and Bhai Sukdev Singh Sukha, just to name a few, who fought to keep the pride of the Sikh community alive.

State-sponsored genocide was just the start, with Sikhs simultaneously falling victim to ideological and philosophical attacks, which broke their allegiance away from their Guru and attached them to the Indian state. Sardar Ajmer Singh’s “The Ideological Siege Of The Sikhs” aims to educate Sikhs about the effects of colonialism and ideological warfare that the Sikhs faced.
Akaal Channel has decided to create a documentary over a two year long project based on this book as a visual guide to help educate the coming generation about the assault we are currently facing and what we need to do to strike back.
In this documentary, Jagjit Singh takes us on a journey with Sikh Scholar Sardar Ajmer Singh, Sikh Historian Jathedar Mohinder Singh and Senior Journalist Avtar Singh, and Sikh Scholar Kiranpreet Kaur explain how Sikhs have fallen victim to this ideological siege.
The main idea that needs to be understood is that this is not something that has only occurred with the Sikhs; this has happened to minorities throughout history. Unfortunately, majority communities have two ways of dealing with minorities: either assimilate them into the majority or eradicate them.
When it came to the Sikhs, the Indian state understood that their power came from one thing, Gurbani. Their strength depended on their belief and understanding of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. So the first thing they did was establish something above the Guru; that was the integrity and unity of the country. They did so by creating Indian nationalism. By defining it, they were also able to define a traitor; “anyone who holds anything else above the unity and integrity of the country.”
These ideas were then preached on a large scale through the Media and the education system. Ideas that were used to break youngsters away from their religion, culture, and language. In doing so, the “Guru Granth, Guru Panth” ideology that the Sikh religion is based on, was left behind and replaced with ideas of serving the country, regardless of when and where it chooses to use you. In turn, this became the reason why Sikhs were part of the Darbar Sahib attack and why so many-sided with the government during that time.
The next target was the Sikh Gurus and Sikh history. These acted as motivation and inspiration to young Sikhs who hear that history and attempt to become just like some of Sikhism’s greatest heroes. One of the most common is describing Guru Nanak Sahib Ji as a “peaceful reformer” or a “social activist”. In doing so, this created the illusion that the Sikh Gurus were just normal humans, which again challenges Sikh ideology, which states;
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਹੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਅਤਿ ਅਛਲ ਅਛੇਉ।
aadh purakh aadhes hai abinaasee at achhal achheau|
Salutations are due to that primal Lord who is indestructible, undeceivable and unending.
ਜਗਤੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ॥੨॥
jagat guroo gur naanak dheau ||2||
Guru Nanak is the enlightener (Guru) of the entire world.
Universities worldwide played a part in this as well, many of them publishing research papers and books trying to disprove the Sikh religion and its glorious history. The fault falls to our religious institutions, such as the Dharam Parchar Committee, who have constantly failed to answer these attacks on the Sikh religion.
