£247,602 will be provided to Wolverhampton council after a government cash fund from the safer streets fund was announced in an attempt to minimise crime within some areas of Wolverhampton.
When talking to newly elected West Midlands Police Crime Commissioner Simon Foster, he said,
“We need to work on the prevention of crime so that we don’t have to deal with the consequences later. This is one of those ways.”
The fund will be used to set up several CCTV systems around Wolverhampton to decrease burglary, vehicle theft and robbery, amongst other crimes as well.
When talking to Mr Karnail Singh, Sikh community leader in Wolverhampton who is currently serving as the president of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, he said;
We hope to see this funding put to use in areas such as Fallings Park, Bushbury or Low Hill and Oxley. These are the areas that we hear about all the time where people are dealing with a crime that could be prevented and criminals could be convicted for if we had more surveillance there.”
According to a report in 2019 by Black Country Live, these areas had 398 reported crimes in July, compared to 371 the month before, and they have continued to rise each year, reaching 423 in March 2021.
Out of the total fund of £18.3 million, Birmingham will also be receiving £432,000, which seems to be targeted at Stockland green in Erdington, where over 263 violent crimes have occurred in 3 months.
