Session 1: Friday 31st January 2020 (Introduction)
The first session was really just a general introduction into this module. In essence this module is the one that will be graded the heaviest and requires the most work then previous projects have required. having said that it was probably the most interesting and my favorite type of module, as it was mainly based on practical work. This module takes 13 weeks and within this time we would have to we would have to create a production project on whatever topic we wanted. This could be video, audio and other different types of formats. I was really excited to do this because it has provided us the most freedom to do things, which made things quite interesting.
After the long introduction we were made to watch a documentary. this specific one was called Black-fish, which was about the way in which sea world treated killer whales. It was definitely an interesting concept and ave me a lot of ideas as to how i could things for my own documentaries.
Session 2: Friday 7th February 2020 (Portfolio’s)
Is this session we started looking into our portfolios. But in order to do so we needed t know the answer to this question…
“Who is my audience?”
This was important as our whole documentary would be based on this in order to appeal to a particular group of people. My documentary is called Democracy to Fascism, which is based on how India being known as the worlds largest democracy, doesn’t actually function as such. In fact a lot of the signs point towards nationalism and even fascism.
After this we began looking into loads of different types of documentaries. They tend to tell you a story of facts that is told in a series of events. There are many types of documentaries. The main ones are listed below:
Expository Mode:
- Working towards the goal of conveying information persuading the audience of an argument.
- Usually has a voiceover
- Visuals direct the audience in how to interpret what we are seeing
Participatory mode:
- Voice of the filmmaker is heard in the film
- Hear questions
Observational mode:
- Fly on the wall
- Long takes and few cuts
- Following the action of wherever you are
- Facilitated by changes in technology
Reflexive mode:
Explores documentary idea itself
Notions of the truth and how films are made
Performative mode:
- Perspective and experience of the film maker
- Have their own person and they do it their own way
Taking this further I decided that my own documentary would be a mix of expository and participatory. This would allow me to tell the story in a certain way, whilst also being an active part of the documentary.
Session 3: Friday 14th February 2020 (Health And Safety Talk)
This session was talk about health and safety. really it was a very informative way of us learning how to remain safe when doing certain things within the media world. Whether its to avoid compromising situations, or to ensure that you just stay out of trouble.
Before going to a certain event, its always important to complete a risk assessment to ensure that you can analyse all of the risks. As well as that you would have to make sure that you have the permission of anyone you decide to record, and if they are not an adult then you would require the signatures of their parents to ensure your own safety and that of the child’s. Its important to be careful and never go anywhere alone. You should always let someone know where you are so nothing bad happens and at least someone knows where you have gone. Call people as you arrive and when you leave so that you can ensure that your family knows that your are leaving.
